Life Has Meaning

Life Has Meaning

Let me emphasize that. YOUR LIFE HAS MEANING. You are a very complex being of body, mind, and spirit. God created you. He has a provision for every part of your being. We all take different paths in life and that’s good. But it is the same Lord who gives meaning, direction, and new strength for each person in each day. In the following pages I will share items about the path my wife and I have taken, provide some blog posts to which I invite your comments, and a few other resources I have found helpful. Above all I want us to see ourselves with a real purpose for life in the midst of this great world. God has chosen to take on human flesh and come among us in His Son, Jesus, the Christ. God’s incarnation in Jesus tells us a great deal about the value He has placed on this world. And that world includes you. Let us continue this journey together.

Irvin Stapf

Pastor Emeritus, Christ Lutheran Church, TAALC Germantown, MD

Irvin and Audrey Stapf have been married for 60 years. They have five children,  fourteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The Stapf’s have made their home in Mt. Airy, Maryland for the past 55 years.

Irvin has had a varied career working as an Electrical Engineer, then answering the Lord’s call into the ordained Lutheran ministry. Along the way he has also operated a woodworking business to help support the family. Audrey has been a full time mom raising their 5 children, but has also served their congregation by leading the Women’s Bible Study and worked with the music program. Audrey has also held several positions in their national Luther body, The American Association of Lutheran Churches.

The Stapf’s have never been ones to make long term plans or set goals for where they wanted to be in X number of years. They are not saying that this is wrong or that everyone should follow this way. But they have had great joy in seeing the Lord guide and provide at every step of life’s journey. Now in retirement, the Lord has again provide, and they continue to enjoy life, family, and many friends.

Pastor Stapf still serves part time as Emeritus Pastor at Christ Lutheran Church in Germantown, Maryland. And as long as God permits he will continue to write and occasionally preach.

Pastor Stapf relates that “I’m nothing special by worldly standards. I’m just a C student who has learned to love the Lord Jesus Christ, and yield to His hand of Grace, albeit at times poorly and with resistance. Yet I am able to look back over 80 plus years and identify time after time where our Lord has intervened in our lives for good. He has given us meaning and purpose, and the best life of joy and love.

”This is the love and guidance He has for you as well. Thank you for following us on this journey. The path is not always easy. It isn’t aimed at worldly prosperity and the fulfillment of all personal dreams. But it does open the way to a life of the deepest meaning, love, and service both now and for eternity. May God’s grace and love guide you each day.

About The Book

Not For This Life Only

A Study for Growth Into Maturity as a Child of God - for today and for eternity

WHAT IS OUR PURPOSE IN LIFE?

The purpose of a painting is to convey the beauty, or meaning in the artist’s mind. The purpose of a cabinet is to serve the useful function its maker intended. The purpose of a space exploration is to complete the mission its scientists sought. In every case the Purpose is determined by the original designer. The same is true for every human being. We are the most complex of all systems. Our purpose is determined by Almighty God our creator. Every person takes a different path in life, but their purpose is guided by the loving, redeeming hand of our Creator. He has revealed Himself to us in Jesus Christ. He works in many and various situations throughout our years to mature us in the self-giving love of Jesus. Even to fulfilling His words to love an enemy and go a second mile with one who has compelled us to go the first mile. It is this kind of sacrificial love that changes hearts bringing an enduring peace and joy for this life and into all eternity.

About The Book

Good Morning! Volume II:

A Devotional For Encouragement and Thought

Each message in this book is fairly short, about 200 words or so. They are intended to be encouraging and thought-provoking. You may start from page one reading each message as a daily devotion. Or you may simply open the book reading whatever message your eyes fall upon. They are written by a Christian Pastor for his congregation, but hopefully can be a source of thought and growth for anyone. Above all, the writer is seeking to share the truth that Almighty God is real and cares about all parts of His creation. He is a part of daily life seeking to draw each of us into a meaningful relationship with Himself through His Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. My own life events are a part of some of these paragraphs, hopefully sharing something how our Lord can use all events, good and bad, for our growth and care. May our Gracious Lord bless and guide you for each of your days. In Him we have hope, meaning, and purpose.

What they say?

Have you ever wondered about your purpose in the grand scheme of things? Well, Irvin Stapf’s book, "Not For This Life Only: A Study for Growth Into Maturity as a Child of God - for today and for eternity," is an exploration of exactly that! It’s all about finding your role as a child of God and understanding the journey of growth that stems from this realization.

Not For This Life Only: A Study for Growth Into Maturity as a Child of God - for Today and for Eternity by Irvin Stapf is an excellent read for anyone who is interested in growing their faith and having a deeper understanding of their relationship with God. Pastor Stapf presents us with a thought provoking book that is meant to get the reader to dive deeper into their own beliefs so they can gain a better understanding of their purpose in life. By doing this, the reader can then gain insights into how to better themselves both in the eye's of God and also in the views of those around us. The writing style is very reflective on past experiences and focused on how to improve upon what we have done so we live the best life possible.

Not For This Life Only: A Study for Growth Into Maturity as a Child of God - for Today and for Eternity by Irvin Stapf is a well-written and inspiring book. Pastor Stapf's emphasis is on aligning with God's blueprint to nurture our spiritual journey for His realm. Life encompasses much more beyond mere acceptance of divine pardon. It entails embracing faith in God and adhering to a developmental roadmap. This pathway gets us ready for the magnitude and beauty that is Heaven. An interesting read and for those of faith, an important one.

Rev. Irvin Stapf masterfully describes one of the more important purposes for our life here on earth in his excellent book "Not For This Life Only". I don't want to give too much away here in the review, but a core premise found throughout the book is God's plan to help us grow in "agape love" using Christ's life and His sacrificial love as an example. All this is in preparation for our time living eternally in God's Kingdom. Pastor Stapf does an excellent job of using core Biblical principles, and does not stray from them. For example, he makes it clear that we are only able to exhibit this agape love, because of the Holy Spirit living within us, and that we can take no credit for this spiritual growth throughout our lifetime in preparation for the afterlife.

This book is filled with so much wisdom that I originally bought the eBook version, but then I also purchased a paperback version for my bookshelf and to share (although I encourage others to buy their own copy given the reasonable price). I've read the book once, but plan to re-read it slowly and digest it in smaller pieces in order to fully absorb its content. What is really impressive is that despite the scholarship and interesting ideas presented in this book, Rev. Stapf humbly gives credit to God and generously mentions several sources in the book's bibliography.

According to the back cover of the book, the author is a Lutheran pastor, and he does adhere strictly to Lutheran doctrine based solely on the Bible. However, this book should appeal to a very broad Christian (and hopefully non-Christian) audience. Everything covered in this book is "Biblically-backed", so all Christians should enjoy and agree with its content. It is simple and straightforward enough for the "young/beginning" Christian to understand. But, it also has enough "meat" to be enjoyed, read, and re-read by more mature believers.

Congratulations to Rev. Stapf for authoring an excellent book.

This book serves as a compass, leading us towards self-discovery and growth, nurturing a profound communion with our eternal purpose. Through insightful wisdom, the writer invites us to recognize our unique role in this world, fostering a spiritual resonance that extends far beyond our current existence. Letters from The Elder to a World in Confusion by Irvin Stapf is a deeply thought-provoking and spiritually urgent book that seeks to address one of the most pressing issues of our time: the reality of spiritual warfare in a confused, divided, and fast-paced world. Structured as a series of 19 letters, the book draws readers into a reflective dialogue with “The Elder,” a voice of wisdom that calls believers to reassess the foundations of their faith and their place in God’s original design for humanity. The epistolary style adds a sense of intimacy, as if the reader is personally receiving counsel and exhortation for navigating modern struggles.

Stapf does not shy away from difficult truths. He openly admits that some readers may feel uncomfortable with his message, but this honesty is part of the book’s strength. Rather than offering shallow comforts or platitudes, the author confronts the harsh realities of a world where advanced technology, cultural shifts, and moral relativism have distracted us from the two greatest commandments: to love God and to love our neighbor. By framing these issues within the context of spiritual warfare, Stapf underscores that the battle is not simply cultural or political—it is profoundly spiritual.

One of the standout features of the book is its ability to balance urgency with hope. While Stapf highlights the destructive influence of satanic forces and the ways society has strayed from God’s plan, he continually points readers back to the redeeming power of Jesus Christ. This dual emphasis—recognizing the reality of the battle while affirming the certainty of victory in Christ—makes the book both sobering and encouraging. Readers are reminded that God’s joy, peace, and strength are far greater than any counterfeit promises offered by the world.

The letters themselves are versatile in scope, touching on everyday concerns as well as larger cultural trends. Topics range from the temptations of materialism and the false allure of technology to the timeless call for deeper fellowship with Christ. Each letter is grounded in Scripture and practical reflection, making the work accessible to both new believers and seasoned Christians seeking renewal in their faith. Stapf’s writing is pastoral, direct, and heartfelt—he writes not to impress but to shepherd souls.

What sets Letters from The Elder to a World in Confusion apart is its prophetic edge. It is not merely a devotional or theological treatise; it is a wake-up call. Stapf challenges his readers to stand firm, to resist compromise, and to recognize the spiritual forces at work behind the confusion of modern life. His words resonate with the urgency of someone who sees the stakes clearly and cannot remain silent. For readers tired of superficial answers, this book provides a refreshing depth and seriousness that is often missing in contemporary Christian literature.

Ultimately, this book is a guide for those who feel disoriented in a culture of noise and deception. It reorients the reader to the eternal truth of God’s Word and the simple but radical call of discipleship: to love God fully and to love others sacrificially. Irvin Stapf’s Letters from The Elder to a World in Confusion is not an easy read in the sense of comfort—it is an easy read in clarity, but it is challenging in its implications. And that is precisely why it is a book worth reading, sharing, and discussing.
